As an avid traveler, I was thrilled when Bruce and Susan invited me to Nepal to experience the work of Himalayan Children’s Charities. I loved the experience of trying new foods, meeting the children and seeing how eager they were to spend time with us.
Bruce asked if I would like to return to teach diction for two months, and I eagerly said yes. I taught diction to the older kids in the group home, which they lovingly named Khushighar, their happy home. I worked on grammar, diction, public speaking and even swim lessons, as they taught me Nepali words, customs and how to cook Nepali style. I loved being able to share our diverse cultures and languages with each other. It was a learning experience for both them and me as I established close relationships with the teens; they even called me Katie didi, big sister Katie.
It has been incredible seeing the transformation HCC has made in their lives, where before, they wouldn’t have many opportunities. I hope that others will want to be a part of creating possibilities for these children who are so appreciative for the opportunities that they have because of HCC. I look forward to returning to Nepal to see their growth and spend time with them in their beautiful Khushighar!
